How Analysts Separate Real UAP Footage from Hoaxes and CGI

Most UAP footage is mundane. The discipline of sorting the small fraction worth recording from the large fraction that isn't rests on a consistent set of checks โ€” provenance, physics, edges, and corroboration.

Most UAP footage is mundane. A surprising share of what circulates online as "leaked" or "shocking" is AI-generated, a re-uploaded clip stripped of context, or a misidentified aircraft. Separating the small fraction worth recording from the large fraction that isn't is a discipline, not a feeling. Experienced analysts look at roughly the same set of things every time.

Start with provenance, not pixels

The single most reliable signal of authenticity is provenance โ€” who recorded the footage, when, where, and how it reached the public. A clip with named witnesses, a known date, and a traceable upload path is already more credible than an anonymous file circulating on social media, regardless of how striking the imagery is. Analysts routinely spend more time reconstructing the chain of custody than studying the image itself, because a convincing clip with no provenance is almost worthless as evidence.

EXIF data, upload timestamps, original filenames, and the history of the account that posted it all matter. A clip that surfaced on a content-farm channel with a history of re-uploading other people's video tells you one thing; the same clip from a verified local resident, recorded to a personal cloud account, tells you something quite different.

Behave like physics, or not

Real objects filmed by real cameras obey the rules of cameras. Motion has to make geometric sense. Depth and parallax have to be consistent with the camera's position and the object's distance. A distant object that moves across the frame at a plausible angular rate, dims as it moves into haze, and interacts with the lighting of the environment is behaving the way a real distant thing does. An object that maintains perfect sharpness while everything else in the frame moves, or that ignores the camera's focus and exposure, is doing something lenses do not.

The most common tell of synthetic footage is that it is too clean. Real handheld footage has roll, shake, stabilization artifacts, and imperfect focus; the object usually does not stay perfectly framed. CGI objects, by contrast, tend to sit neatly in composition because the artist placed them there.

Edges, lighting, and the small failures of compositing

When something has been composited into a scene, the seams are usually visible to a careful eye. Look at the edges of the object against different backgrounds in the same frame โ€” sky, cloud, building. A composited object will often show a soft halo, a faint matte line, or an edge that does not change character against the background the way a real object's would. The object's lighting has to agree with the scene's lighting: if the sun is clearly behind the camera and to the left, a real object's highlights fall accordingly. CGI that ignores this is common.

Low-resolution footage is not reliable cover for poor compositing. Upscaling and compression artifacts exist in real footage, but they apply to the object and the scene uniformly. When an object has a different compression signature from its surroundings โ€” sharper, differently blocky, or oddly smooth โ€” that is a flag, not a feature.

Corroboration beats any single clip

The strongest evidence is never a single perfect shot. It is footage that other sources corroborate. Multiple witnesses in different locations filming the same event from different angles, or independent radar and sensor returns matching a visual recording, are far harder to fake than any one clip. Analysts weight corroboration heavily: a grainy phone video confirmed by a second observer in another part of the city will outrank a crisp, isolated clip of unknown origin every time.

The pattern, not the verdict

Good analysis rarely ends in "definitely alien" or "definitely fake." It ends in a confidence level with stated caveats: this footage is consistent with a real distant object, the motion is plausible, the provenance is thin, and there is no corroborating sensor data. That is the kind of honest, qualified conclusion the Alien Archive is designed to record.

The goal of the discipline is not to manufacture certainty where there isn't any. It is to sort what actually happened from what only looks like it did, and to keep both โ€” the genuine sightings and the documented misidentifications โ€” in a record where someone can tell the difference.
